Medical Underwriting

Not every insurance product or provider requires medical underwriting, but evidence of good health may help to lower insurance premiums. Some insurance companies request medical examinations to provide them with a snapshot of the applicant's current health conditions. This information is then used to determine the applicant's insurability. Abnormal findings can create problems in obtaining this coverage and possibly with future applications as well.

Just as you would spruce yourself up for a family photo, the following tips can help you make sure the picture presented is the best possible picture for the insurance company.

  • You should get a good night's sleep before the exam

  • You should not exercise 12 to 18 hours before the exam

  • You should not consume any form of alcohol for at least 8 hours before the exam.

  • If possible, you should fast for 8 to 12 hours before the blood profile

  • You should not consume any form of caffeine, food, or beverage (except water) for at least 2 hours before the exam

  • You should not smoke for at least 1 hour before the exam

  • If you are taking prescription medication they should have it ready for reference at the exam

  • If you are taking over the counter medication be sure to advise the examiner

  • You should drink 8 ounces of water 1 hour before the exam

  • You should reschedule the appointment if you are under any kind of stress the day of the exam

Non-Medical Underwriting Not only do your age, gender and body type affect insurance underwriting, but possible so could your habits and hobbies.

If you engage in:

  • Aviation

  • Climbing, Caving or Trekking

  • Motor Vehicle Sports

  • Foreign Travel

  • Water Sports

  • Tobacco Use

Or any other potentially hazardous activities, they could potentially affect your insurability. Always disclose all relevant information to your insurance company. Any information that is false, incomplete, or misleading may void a policy.
